The Gator Hole

The American alligator is the signature critter at Savannah NWR, drawing many visitors to see this mighty reptile in its natural habitat.  Alligators carve out open spaces in the marsh (called "gator holes") that become mini-ecosystems and provide homes to many other animals.

We have carved out a nature and book store we call The Gator Hole within the visitor center at Savannah NWR.  It has become the home for a carefully selected array of books, clothing, and educational items that will enhance your understanding of the refuges and the plants and animals that inhabit them.

The Gator Hole opened on Monday, March 8, 2010.  All proceeds from sales will be used to fund projects on our refuges.  Stop by to see what we have to offer.  If you are interested in volunteering at the Visitor Center or in The Gator Hole, e-mail us at webmaster@coastalrefuges.org.

We have created a Kid's Zone with touch table where the little ones can play and learn while you shop.  We feature many items for children, including:

Folkmanis® hand and finger animal puppets

Award winning nature projects from The Young Scientist®

Toy snakes, spiders, and alligators from Safari, Ltd.®
